Our first date was an airport carpark

We’d been talking for three weeks and could never line up. Her nights, my swings. Then it turned out I flew out the same morning she finished a shift ten minutes from the terminal.

So that was the date. Airport carpark, 5:40am, two flat whites in the back of her wagon while the sun came up over the long-term parking. Fifteen minutes, then I had to check in. Worst venue in Australia. Best date I’ve had.

Anyone who hasn’t worked a roster would say that’s a bit sad. Anyone who has knows exactly what it means — she drove there after a twelve-hour shift because that was the only window there was.
